A panel of experts at Fraunhofer headquarters evaluates the performance centers on the basis of a point system. The quality and ambition of the strategic and operational plans, the actual results achieved and measures implemented, and a self-selected transfer highlight that serves as an outstanding example of the performance center's impact are examined. Each of these three evaluation items was assessed with 0 to 10 points. In total, a maximum of 30 points was possible.
While the Simulation and Software-based Innovation Center shared first place with the Photonics Center in Jena in 2022 with 28 points, this year it is alone at the top with 29 points!
Successful Collaboration with BioNTech and Vairan Convinces the Committee
As a particularly outstanding transfer highlight in 2021, the committee rated the collaboration with BioNTech. The scientists involved developed a flexible platform to manage the production process of individualized cancer drugs and the COVID-19 vaccine at BioNTech. In the following year, the integration of radiotherapy planning and therapy management in a software that is used worldwide at Varian, the market leader for radiation technology, was recognized.
High Performance Center Scores with High Transfer Success
The committee noted very positively the high industry revenues and in particular the already impressive software license revenues. Above all, it praised the active cooperation and employee rotation among the partners. The strategic, forward-looking orientation of the performance center was also highlighted.
In addition to the new transfer center »Biotechnology/Health« with its highlight projects with BioNTech and Varian Medical Systems, the performance center is bundling its portfolio on the strategic transfer topics »Hydrogen«, »Energy« and »Digital Agriculture«.
In the view of the experts, the character of the performance center, i.e. the close cooperation of the partners at the Kaiserslautern site, is clearly evident and leads to the high transfer success of the performance center.
